FERIA DE SEVILLA IS ALMOST HERE!

Next week, from the 20th to the 26th April, the biggest party in Sevilla will be held in the neighbourhood of Los Remedios.

Just two weeks after the Semana Santa the people of Sevilla gets ready for 6 days of music, dancing and fun.

It is a great time to enjoy what many consider the typical Andalusia: Rebujito (typical drink made with dry sherry), toros, sevillanas, flamencos dresses and horses.

On the Feria there is place for everyone! During the day is the perfect time for childrem to go to the Cacharritos (funfair) and most younsters prefer the night to go out and end up in the morning having some Churros con chocolate.

SOUTH POP FESTIVAL IN SEVILLA

25th to 28th March, 2010 Teatro Alameda / Sala Obbio / Sala Malandar

Four days of independent music and dancing. An opportunity to attend some of the most avant-garde European bands. Going from European electronic pop sung in Spanish, English or French to Folk music.

It will take place in the Teatro Alameda, with complementary activities at Sala Malandar and Sala Obbio.

There will be bands coming from Canada (The Hidden Cameras), Germany (Stereo Total), France (François & The Atlas Mountains), Sweden (Lacrosse) and Spain (Sr Chinarro) among other artists.

This festival has a very young public, with lots of students and fans of the independent pop-rock music that look for a non-comercial style.

XXVII FESTIVAL DE MÚSICA ANTIGUA DE SEVILLA. feMÁS 2010.

Sevilla's Ancient Music Festival (feMÁS 2010)

This takes place every March in a selection of churches across the region as well as the Alcazar at the historic town centre.
Additionally, concerts take place in the Lope de Vega theatre, which was auctioned in 1927 and covers more than 5,600 meters.
Only historic musical instruments are used at this festival and people may find that they learn something about ancient entertainment as well as enjoy the festivities which, like all Spanish fiestas, are likely to be very memorable.

This year it will be from 7th to 21st March.

The Theater of Itálica, a Roman city founded by Publio Cornelio Escipión ´The African´, was built between 30 and 37 a.D. During the new excavations and research promoted by the Consejería de Cultura in the surroundings of the theater, a “religious area” from the original building was uncovered. This area is believed to have been devoted to the worship of the Egyptian God Isis.

I Artistic Photography Contest: Semana Santa

Diario de Sevilla and Fnac sponsor the I Artistic Photography Contest with the Semana Santa as theme.

Having started February 22th, this initiative lets photography lovers show their talent while they are given the opportunity of winning a special prize. The pictures will be posted on the Diario de Sevilla web, www.diariodesevilla.es, by March 15th.

However, only 28 pictures will be chosen to be exhibited on the Fnac Forum. The three winners will be revealed on the opening of this forum, on April 5th at 8pm.

For the first time, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla gathers 41 works of art belonging to an early stage in the professional life of painter Bartolomé E. Murillo. The museum will offer unknown works from his youth and will be crucial in the research on the Sevillian painter’s first stage.

So this is a good opportunity to get to know more about the Andalusian art.

Flamenco viene del Sur

Flamenco viene del Sur consists in a series of 41 shows that will be taking place in the eight capitals of province in Andalucía. This festival started February 19th in Jaén with a recital by Paco Cepero, and will conclude May 19th in Málaga, with “Flamenco Universal" by Pepa Montes.

The novelty this year is that seven shows will be broadcasted over the Internet. Some of them can be watched on the Flamenco en Red web http://www.flamencoenred.tv/

Kimberly Leonard (leon0185@d.umn.edu or kleonard@ikonics.com) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during Fall ’02 and Spring ’03. She is currently living in Duluth, MN. “I am the Trade Show and Project Manager at IKONICS
Corporation. IKONICS is an international leader in the development of
imaging technologies, introducing products and process solutions for a
diverse array of imaging markets. UPO refined my Spanish speaking
abilities which has been beneficial in my career of an international
public corporation. I have been able to communicate with Spanish
speakers at trade shows and update IKONICS product literature.

My current roommate, Annette Mooney, is preparing for her study abroad
experience this upcoming Spring semester. I am excited she has
selected UPO and will be learning from your university.

"I graduated with a degree in accounting and international business. I am currently living close to Philadelphia. I am an accountant for an oil and gas company. I am Mexican so I speak Spanish to my family all the time. I believe the study abroad program was somewhat new at the time. It was one of the greatest experiences I went through."

In Anna´s words: “I'm about to begin my Master's degree in biomedical engineering. I still try to use Spanish though as much as I can! I miss it (and it leaves me quickly), but I still try to read in it, participate in things like Engineers Without Borders in Spanish-speaking countries, and go Salsa dancing. It's not the same as being in Spain, but it'll have to do for now :)”

Our project is the Ambassadors Girls Scholarship Program; we have provided scholarship, mentoring and other holistic services to over 60,000 scholarship recipients in Eastern Africa.”

“I’m teaching English as a second language to Kindergarten to Middle School Korean students at a private English Academy. I actually came here because of someone I met at UPO. Tim Allen and I both attended there in the fall of 2006. We both graduated in the spring of 2008 and weren't quite sure what to do after graduation. He asked me if I wanted to teach overseas with him, I said yes, and here I am. He has already gone back to the States, but I'm loving life here in Korea! I sadly don't get to use my Spanish much lately, but I can still speak it! I've actually met some Koreans that speak better Spanish than I do... ha ha… I'll have to work on that.”

Johanna Zuber (jzuber@student.umass.edu) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Spring ´08 semester and is currently living in Amherst, MA.

“Right now I'm on summer vacation. At school I'm planning on graduating in the winter of 2010. I've been sailing for the school's team, and I've been nominated for the captain position! I'm also going to visit Seville in November”.

Brad Keiser (brad.l.keiser@gmail.com) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Spring ´08 semester and is currently living in San Vicente, El Salvador.

“I joined the Peace Corps and will be living in El Salvador for the next 2 years and 3 months, working with the youth there”.

Fall 2008 – Spring 2009

Lissa Vassalotti (ljvass@wm.edu) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Fall´08 semester. “I graduated from my University (William and Mary) in May, and I am planning on taking one year off before going to 4 more years of medical school. I am so in love with Sevilla that my friend and I decided to move to Sevilla in September/October and stay for a full academic year (until the end of May/June), with the hopes of finding a job teaching English. I think this will be a great opportunity to live as a local once again, instead of as a tourist, and travel before I go back to studying all the time!”

Sara Capra (scapra@du.edu) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Fall´08 semester and is presently living in Denver, Colorado. She is currently interning at the Department of Commerce in Washington D.C. during the summer of 2009.

Summer Sessions 2002 - 2009

Lauren Guerra (allegria18@hotmail.com) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Summer ’02 Session and is currently living in San Francisco, CA, USA. “I teach religion (and Spanish) at a private high school here in San Francisco :)”

Hillary Root (hillary.root@gmail.com) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Summer ´07 session and is currently living in East Hampton, Connecticut. “I am currently a Notre Dame Americorps Volunteer in the city of Hartford, Connecticut. I work as an After School Instructor and Program Assistant for Hands On Hartford's Center for Youth. And I ended up needing to use some Spanish since the majority of my kids are Hispanic and come from Spanish speaking families!”

Amelia Popham (ameliapopham@gmail.com) attended Universidad Pablo de Olavide during the Summer ´07 session and is currently living in New York City, NY. She is a Social Work graduate student at Columbia University

Dear former UPO study abroad participant,

Greetings from sunny Seville! We are writing to you to announce the creation of the new UPO Center for Foreign Students Alumni Association! Our aim is to reconnect those with shared experiences at UPO so you may all network, socialize and reminisce about your experience in Seville. And it´s free so don´t worry, we´ll never ask you for money!

We would love to know about your whereabouts and what you´ve been up to since your semester/year at UPO. Are you still using your español? Working with a company with Spanish connections? Every month we´ll be interviewing a former participant and a current study abroad student to highlight in our newsletter.

We also want to keep you updated on news in Seville and at UPO. We want to include tips from current students on where to eat, what to do, etc. so if you or your family or friends (or future study abroad students) want to come to Seville, you´ll all have some up to date information. For example, the long awaited metro! It’s actually here!!

We have created an Alumni Association Blog in which we will post everything you will send us (pictures are welcome too). We will update it often so you will be able to read about former UPO classmates’ experiences and their current whereabouts and activities. Maybe you´re living in the same town as a former UPO participant? Or working at the same company/organization?

We know that many of you are still in touch with your former classmates from UPO (through e-mail, Facebook, My Space) so if this email does not reach everyone, please feel free to pass this message along.
